Wispy bangs are bangs thinned so the forehead shows through in places, instead of one solid, dense line across the front. They are often called the low commitment bang style, since the softer edge is more forgiving to grow out and to live with day to day than a heavier, more defined shape. Our full types of bangs guide covers this style alongside every other bang shape if you are still comparing options.

What makes wispy bangs wispy

The thinning is the whole idea. A stylist removes some of the strands within the bang section, using thinning shears or point cutting, so the remaining pieces separate into individual wisps rather than reading as one flat block. This is the opposite approach from blunt bangs, deliberately kept solid and dense with a hard, straight edge.

Who tends to suit them

Because wispy bangs are soft and see-through rather than heavy, they suit a wide range of face shapes without adding much visual weight to the forehead. Round faces, which can look shortened by a heavy, solid bang, often do better with the lighter coverage a wispy version gives. Fine hair is a particularly good match too: since the style depends on thinning rather than density, it does not need the volume a blunt, solid line needs to look full.

Curly hair can wear a wispy shape too, though the natural texture already thins the visual density somewhat on its own, which our curly bangs guide covers in more detail. Thick hair works well too, as long as your stylist thins enough of the underlying bulk that the pieces stay separated instead of clumping back into one dense section within a week or two.

The upkeep

Wispy bangs still need regular trims to keep their shape, typically every 3 to 4 weeks, similar to most bang styles. What sets them apart is the grow-out: since there is no hard, solid line to maintain, a wispy bang loses its shape more gradually than a blunt one, so a missed trim or two looks less obviously overdue. This is a big part of why they get called the low commitment bang style. Ease into them, adjust the length slightly with each visit, and grow them out later without the more noticeable in-between stage a blunt bang goes through.

See the coverage on your own forehead

How much forehead a wispy bang actually leaves visible depends on your hair's density and how much thinning a stylist does, easier to judge on your own photo than from someone else's. Apply wispy bangs to your own photo in HairGlam and see the coverage and shape against your own hairline before you book a trim.

Questions people ask

What are wispy bangs?
Wispy bangs are bangs that have been thinned so individual pieces show through, letting some forehead show rather than a solid, dense line all the way across.
Do wispy bangs suit fine hair?
Yes. Fine hair often does better with wispy bangs than with blunt bangs, since a thinned, wispy line does not depend on density the way a solid, straight-across edge does.
How often do wispy bangs need a trim?
Wispy bangs typically need a trim every 3 to 4 weeks to keep the thinned, piece-y shape, though they tend to grow out more gracefully than blunt bangs since there is no hard line to lose.
Can wispy bangs be grown out easily?
Yes, more easily than most other bang styles. Because the edge is already soft and thinned rather than solid, wispy bangs blend into the rest of your length with less of an awkward in-between stage.
