Harley Quinn makeup: the smudged pink and blue look, step by step

A woman with smudged pink and blue eyes, a red lip, a heart on her cheek and platinum pigtails tipped pink and blue

Harley Quinn makeup is the most searched character look of the season, and it is easier than it looks. A pale base, smudged pink around one eye and blue around the other, a bright red lip and a small black heart on the cheekbone. The hair does the rest. Here is the full look step by step, an easy ten minute version, a glam version, and the two tone pigtails.

What makes it read as Harley

The recognizable parts are the two colors split across the eyes and the matching two tone pigtails. Everything else can change. The pale base and the heart make it the classic version; drop them and it is still clearly Harley. That flexibility is why it is the most popular costume this year.

Harley Quinn makeup, step by step

1. Lighten the base

A foundation one or two shades lighter than your skin, blended down the neck and set with powder. It should look pale, not white, so the colors around the eyes stand out.

2. Smudge pink around one eye

Pack a hot pink shadow on the lid of one eye and smudge it out past the brow bone and down under the eye, rougher at the edges than you would ever wear it. It should look like it was done in a hurry by someone having a good time.

3. Smudge blue around the other

Repeat on the other eye with a bright blue. Keep both roughly the same size so the face looks balanced, even though the colors are different.

4. Line and lash

A smudged black pencil on both waterlines and a coat of mascara. Skip precise winged liner; this look is deliberately messy.

5. Paint a bright red lip

Line with a red pencil and fill with a true, bright red. A slightly smudged corner suits the character, so do not fuss over it.

6. Draw the heart

A small black heart on one cheekbone with liquid liner, just below the outer corner of the eye. Draw the outline first, then fill it.

Harley Quinn hair: two tone pigtails

Part light blonde hair down the middle and tie two high pigtails above the ears. Spray the ends of one pigtail pink and the other blue with a temporary color spray, and let it dry fully before you get dressed. Darker hair can use a platinum wig, or spray only the ends so the two colors still show.

You can preview the pigtails and the colors on your own photo before you commit to a wig: high pigtails and the pink and blue split dye are both in the catalog. An easy ten minute version

No time for the full face? Skip the pale base. Blend a soft pink smoky eye on one side and a soft blue on the other, add a red lip and draw the heart. With two quick pigtails it is unmistakably Harley and takes about ten minutes.

A glam version

For a sharper, more polished Harley, keep the two colors but blend them cleanly into a cut crease shape on each eye, add a black wing on top and a glossy red lip. Add a second small heart or a few drawn stars. It still reads as Harley and it photographs beautifully.

Other looks that go with Harley

If you are going as a group, a pop art comic look, a cute clown or a scary clown all sit well next to Harley. For a different kind of statement, our Sally makeup guide covers the stitched rag doll, the other big character look of the year.

Questions people ask

What colors do I need for Harley Quinn makeup?
A pale foundation, a hot pink and a bright blue eyeshadow, black liner, a true red lipstick and a black liquid liner or pencil for the heart. That is the whole kit.
Which eye is pink and which is blue?
Most versions put the pink on the character's right eye and the blue on the left, matching the pigtails on the same sides, but either way reads correctly as long as the hair matches the eyes.
How do I do Harley Quinn hair?
Two high pigtails from a center part on light blonde hair, one side tipped pink and the other blue. Temporary color spray on the ends is the easiest way to get the two colors for one night.
Is there an easy Harley Quinn makeup version?
Yes. Skip the pale base, do a soft pink smoky eye on one side and a blue one on the other, add a red lip and draw a small heart. It takes about ten minutes.
