The line is the entire point. Held at the sides, the front pieces sit lower than the back by anywhere from an inch to several, and the perimeter travels in a straight diagonal between the two. Because the back is short it needs a clean nape and regular attention; because the front is long it swings forward as you move and lands against the cheek. Straight hair shows the angle most clearly.
- Suitsround, square, oval face shapes. The forward diagonal pulls the eye down and inward past the cheeks, narrowing a round outline and taking attention off a wide jaw.
- Hair typefine, medium density, thick, straight. The angle only reads on hair that hangs, so straight and lightly wavy textures show it while curl shrinks the front and flattens the difference.
- UpkeepEvery five to six weeks, since the short back grows into the neck fast, plus a straightener or round brush to keep the diagonal visible.
- Ask forAsk for an A-line bob and say in inches how much longer the front should be than the back, so the angle is agreed before the first cut.
