Square face shape

Haircuts for a square face

Forehead, cheekbones and jaw are close in width, and the jaw has real corners. The cuts that work introduce curve and diagonal where the face has straight lines.

How to tell

Your three widths, forehead, cheekbones and jaw, come out within roughly a centimetre of each other, and the jawline turns a visible corner below the ear rather than curving. Face length is usually not much greater than the width. The overall read is angular and strong rather than soft.

What actually works, and why

A square face already has structure, so the job is contrast rather than more structure. Soft waves, curved layers and anything that lands off the jaw corner all introduce the curve the face does not have. Side parts and diagonal fringes break the symmetry that makes a square read square. Length that falls past the jaw lets the eye travel through the corner instead of stopping on it. Volume at the crown lengthens the whole shape.

What tends to fight it

A blunt bob that ends level with the jaw draws a straight line directly along the strongest line you already have, which doubles it. Very short square cuts and heavy straight across bangs stack more right angles on top of the ones your bone structure supplies. Slicked back styles with no movement expose the jaw corners completely. Some people want exactly that effect, which is a legitimate choice, just make it deliberately.

See it on your own face first

Every style in this catalog renders onto a photo of you, so you are judging your own face shape and coloring rather than a model's.
