The difference is deliberate and usually obvious, anywhere from an inch to a jaw-to-collarbone gap between the two sides. The short side is often tucked behind the ear so the long side reads as the front of the face. It only works with a fixed part, since swapping sides throws the balance, and both sides have to be trimmed together or the gap drifts. Growing it out means letting the short side catch up.

  • Suitsround, square, oval face shapes. An uneven perimeter removes the symmetry the eye uses to judge width, so a round or square outline reads longer and less even sided.
  • Hair typefine, medium density, thick, straight. Straight to lightly wavy hair keeps both lengths where they were cut, while strong curl shrinks unevenly and the two sides stop matching the plan.
  • UpkeepEvery six weeks to hold the difference, plus daily smoothing on the long side so the contrast between the two stays legible.
  • Ask forAsk for an asymmetric bob, name which side stays long and by how much, and have the part set where you actually wear it.
