This goes a step further than raven: the blue is pigment inside the color rather than a sheen sitting on the surface, so it shows as an actual hue you can name. In photographs the crown and the ends usually read distinctly navy while the interior of the hair stays black. It fades in an unusual direction, losing the blue first and settling into a neutral black over a couple of months instead of turning brassy.

  • Undertonecool. Strongly cool throughout, it sharpens against pink and olive skin and gives a hard, high contrast edge next to fair complexions.
  • Starting pointIt deposits over any brown or black base with no bleach, but the blue reads most clearly where the hair has some lightness in it, since a very dark base absorbs the cast.
  • UpkeepBlue pigment is the first thing to wash away, so a blue gloss or toning shampoo at four to six week intervals is what keeps the cast alive, regrowth appears in three to four weeks, and nothing is lifted so there is no condition cost.

Try it before the bleach

Color is the expensive mistake to get wrong. Put Blue Black against your own skin tone first.
