Mushroom Brown
A cool, muted light brown with ashy gray undertones, closer to a flat taupe than to any golden shade.

Where most light browns carry some warmth, mushroom brown is built to cancel it, using a gray-beige base to keep the color muted and slightly smoky rather than golden. It reads as understated in most light, closer to a dusty taupe than to a bright shade, and that muted quality is the whole appeal. The toner responsible for the ash cast is also the first thing to fade, so warmth can creep back in within a few weeks unless it is maintained. Regrowth shows softly because the depth sits close to many natural light brown shades.
- Undertonecool, neutral. The muted, ashy cast sits well against pink, neutral and cool-toned skin, and can look a little flat against strongly golden or olive complexions that carry their own warmth.
- Starting pointNatural light brown hair reaches this with a gloss or light toner and little lifting, while darker brown hair needs more lift first to clear the warmth the ash tone is meant to cancel.
- UpkeepRe-tone every 6 to 8 weeks to keep the ash from fading warm, and a purple or blue shampoo once a week helps hold the muted cast between visits.
