Fire red sits at the warm, orange-leaning end of the red family, close to the mixing point between a true red and a bright copper, applied at full strength rather than diluted for a natural look. Under daylight it reads close to a traffic-cone orange-red; indoors it settles into a deep warm red. Because the base underneath has to be pale for the pigment to show true, an uneven lift is easier to hide under this shade than under a cooler red. It fades through a lighter orange before settling toward a pale copper.

  • Undertonewarm. The heat in this shade suits golden, olive and warm complexions, and it can look overwhelming against very fair, pink-toned or very cool skin.
  • Starting pointA pale yellow-blonde base, around level eight, gives the truest fire red, so brown or black hair needs bleaching first and the color goes on afterward as a vivid.
  • UpkeepRefresh every 3 to 4 weeks with a color-depositing conditioner, since vivid reds fade faster than any other pigment family, and wash in cold water to slow it down.
