Contrast is the whole idea: clipper-short or closely tapered sides against a band of untouched curl two or three inches wide down the middle. Curl does the lifting on its own, so the top is shaped and defined rather than spiked. The sides start showing scalp as they grow, which puts the cut on a short clock, while the strip itself needs the usual leave-in and gel routine.
- Suitsround, square, oval face shapes. Stripping width off the sides and stacking height in the middle pulls the outline vertical, which narrows a round or square face.
- Hair typecurly, coily, thick. The strip needs curl tight enough to stand on its own, so coily and tightly curled hair carries it where a loose curl just flops sideways.
- UpkeepThe sides want clippers back over them every second or third week, while the strip is trimmed a few times a year and styled at every wash.
- Ask forAsk for tapered sides starting at a number one or two guard at the bottom, with a center strip about three fingers wide left at full curl length.
