Ash works by subtraction: the violet and blue in the toner exist to kill the warmth the lightening created, which is why the finish looks softly gray rather than bright. That toner is also the first thing down the drain, so yellow surfaces again within four to six washes unless a purple or blue shampoo keeps replacing it. In cool daylight it can read almost silver; under warm bulbs it settles into a plain soft blonde.

  • Undertonecool, neutral. It agrees with pink or blue-toned fair skin and with cool deep skin, but on strongly golden or olive complexions the gray in it can leave the face looking drained.
  • Starting pointThe hair has to be lifted to a pale yellow before toning, which means bleach for anyone starting darker than a dark blonde, because ash toner cannot cover orange.
  • UpkeepRe-tone every four to six weeks and use a purple shampoo once or twice a week; the bleach involved makes bond treatments and regular end trims part of the cost.

Try it before the bleach

Color is the expensive mistake to get wrong. Put Ash Blonde against your own skin tone first.
