Ash means the yellow has been neutralized, so the dipped section reads beige to gray rather than sunny. The gap between a mid-brown base and a level eight blonde is wide enough that the join shows plainly unless the bleach was feathered upward into the length. In overcast light the ends can look almost mushroom colored, while direct sun brings back a faint warmth at the very tips where the hair is most porous.
- Undertonecool, neutral. With no gold left in it, this sits against pink and olive undertones and keeps the ends from competing with warmth in the natural base.
- Starting pointThe ends have to be bleached to a pale yellow somewhere around level eight or nine before an ash toner will read as ash rather than dirty gold.
- UpkeepAsh pigment washes out faster than it went in, so plan a toning gloss every four to six weeks, do nothing at the roots, and give the bleached ends a weekly bond or protein treatment.
