Two or three levels up from espresso, this is the depth at which brown starts behaving like a color rather than a near-black. The warmth reads as cocoa, sitting between the coffee flatness of espresso and the copper lean of chestnut. Under warm indoor light it looks softer and richer, and in daylight the mid-lengths lift toward milk chocolate. Warm browns shed their brown pigment first as they wash out, so it drifts orange-ward without a gloss.
- Undertonewarm. The cocoa warmth mirrors golden and peach undertones in the skin, while against very cool pink complexions it can look slightly separate from the face.
- Starting pointIt deposits directly on any natural base up to about level five or six, and anything darker than that has to come up a level or two before the warmth shows at all.
- UpkeepRefresh with a warm gloss every four to six weeks as the red-orange pigment surfaces, and expect visible regrowth within about a month on lighter natural bases.
