Note the direction of travel: the dip here is lighter than the base rather than darker, so the ends warm up instead of deepening. In low light it behaves like a soft ombre and only separates into two clear tones under sun. Because the shift is only two or three levels, the transition is forgiving, and it grows out without the hard band that a high contrast dip leaves behind.
