The under-cross is what separates this from a French braid: strands pass beneath rather than over, so the braid sits on top of the hair like a raised rope. A center part splits the head into two even halves, and each side picks up new hair the whole way to the nape before continuing as a free braid. Day-old hair grips better than freshly washed, and a light tug on every loop afterward widens the braid.
- Suitsoval, round, square face shapes. The under-cross makes each braid stand proud from hairline to nape, adding a line of height along the top while the sides are pulled in tight against the head.
- Hair typemedium density, thick, straight, wavy, curly. It needs enough length to reach the nape plus a little grip, so silky freshly washed hair usually wants texture spray first.
- UpkeepA wear-and-redo style rather than a cut, holding two or three days before the front fuzzes, and about fifteen minutes to put in.
