Maroon is burgundy with the violet taken out and a little brown put in, so the panel reads as a dark, earthy red rather than a wine. Tucked under a black or dark brown canopy it stays almost invisible when the hair is down and flat, then flashes at the ends, behind the ears and in a ponytail. Because it is warmer than burgundy it survives fading better: as the red rinses out it drifts toward a soft auburn brown instead of a pink tinged brick, which is why people who found burgundy too bright end up asking for maroon.
