Silver is less a dye than an absence of pigment plus a blue-violet toner, and every part of living with it follows from that. The panel throws a metallic sheen when the hair moves and looks nearly white against black in strong light. Warmth is the enemy: the moment the toner starts to go, yellow surfaces and the silver reads dull beige instead of steel. Hard water speeds that up considerably.
- Undertonecool, neutral. A neutral-cold gray with nothing warm to soften it, most at home beside cool or olive skin, and sharper still where the complexion is deep.
- Starting pointSilver only exists on hair lifted to level ten, so a dark base means bleaching the panel out completely and then toning it with blue-violet.
- UpkeepTone every two to three weeks with a silver shampoo in rotation between; the toning cadence here is the tightest of any shade in this family.
