The wave is set rather than grown, usually on rods or by braiding the locs damp and letting them dry fully, which curves the body of each loc and springs the last few inches into a curl. That curvature costs an inch or two of visible length and widens the silhouette through the mids. The set relaxes across several days, so a defined curl on day one becomes a loose bend by the weekend.

  • Suitsoblong, square, oval face shapes. The wave pushes each loc out at the side and replaces the straight vertical hang with a curve, which widens a long face and softens a square corner.
  • Hair typemedium density, thick, curly, coily. Locs have to be mature and reasonably slim to take a set, because thick heavy locs pull the curl straight under their own weight within a day.
  • UpkeepReset the wave after every wash and allow overnight drying on the rods, on top of the usual root maintenance every four to eight weeks.
  • Ask forAsk for a rod set on your locs with the curl concentrated in the bottom third and only a loose bend through the mids.
