What separates this from a tousled wave is regularity: the S repeats at roughly the same interval down every section, so the surface stays smooth and the shine runs unbroken. Weight is kept fairly solid through the perimeter, which gives the wave a body to move against. It sits well on hair that already has a slight bend and needs only a light cream to organize it. Grown out, it simply becomes a longer version of itself.
- Suitsoval, oblong, square, diamond face shapes. Fullness lands at the jaw and just below, which fills the narrow lower third of a diamond face and shortens the vertical line of an oblong one.
- Hair typefine, medium density, straight, wavy. Fine hair carries this better than a heavier texture, because the wave depends on a mostly unlayered weight line rather than on volume.
- UpkeepTrim on an eight to ten week cycle so the perimeter stays clean, and plan on a mid-size iron or a set of rollers most mornings if the hair is straight.
- Ask forAsk for a single-length cut at the shoulder with only face-framing layers, and tell your stylist you want a smooth S-wave, not a piecey texture.
