Moving the part two or three inches from center throws the bulk of the hair to one side, and that imbalance is the whole effect: lift at the root on the heavy side, a diagonal sweep over the brow, and a cleaner profile on the other. The part has to be cut for, not just combed in, or the hair fights back toward center by midday. A little root powder, or a clip while it dries, sets the direction.
- Suitsround, oval, square face shapes. Loading the hair onto one side puts an uneven mass beside the cheek, and that imbalance is what takes the apparent width out of a round or square outline.
- Hair typefine, medium density, thick, straight. Thick hair holds the deep part without help, while fine hair needs a little root lift so the heavy side does not collapse flat against the head.
- UpkeepEvery ten weeks for a trim, and the part has to be combed back in while the hair is damp at each wash, since a deep part will not hold if the hair dries in its natural fall.
