Only the gather is smooth, and even that stays loose, because pulling curls tight at the base stretches the pattern and the tail loses its shape. Everything above the elastic gets a light hand and everything below is left alone to spring. Volume sits wide rather than long, so the profile is a mass of curl behind the head. A satin scrunchie instead of a rubber band prevents both the dent and the breakage at the tie point.
- Suitsoval, square, oblong face shapes. The tail carries width behind and above the head, filling out a longer face, while the fully exposed hairline keeps a square jaw from setting the widest line.
- Hair typethick, wavy, curly, coily. This needs a real curl pattern to build the cascade, and denser hair fills the tail out so it reads round instead of stringy at the ends.
- UpkeepRefresh with water and a leave-in most mornings, and trim every ten to twelve weeks so the curl ends do not taper into thin, straggly points.
- Ask forAsk for a loose crown gather on defined curls, no brushing through the tail, and a satin band rather than an elastic.
