The gather comes first, so the braid starts at the elastic instead of at the scalp, which keeps all the tension in one place rather than along a parting. Tighten at the top and loosen slightly toward the ends so the braid tapers rather than ropes. Finished length sits noticeably shorter than loose hair because the weave takes up several inches. Sleep in it and the next morning hands you a wave pattern for free.
- Suitsround, oval, square face shapes. Below the elastic the braid narrows to a single rope, so the silhouette beside the jaw is one thin vertical line and the crown lift supplies all the height.
- Hair typemedium density, thick, straight, wavy, curly. Braiding needs grip, so medium to thick hair with a little wave or texture holds a braid far longer than very fine, slippery hair will.
- UpkeepTen minutes to braid, and the ends want dusting roughly every eleven weeks, since a tapered braid shows every split along its last few inches.
- Ask forAsk for a crown-height gather with a three-strand braid taken from the elastic to the ends and tied off with a clear band.
