This is a disconnection rather than a blend: the sides drop to clipper length in one hard step and the longer top falls over the line and hides it. Tuck that top behind the ear and the shave is exposed, which is most of the point. It also removes serious bulk from thick hair without shortening the top. Clipper regrowth turns prickly at around three weeks and starts to blur the edge.
- Suitsoval, round, square face shapes. Shaving the sides removes every bit of width at ear level while the disconnected top keeps its height, so the outline reads taller and narrower than it measures.
- Hair typemedium density, thick, straight, wavy. Thick hair benefits most because the undercut takes out weight the scissors would otherwise have to thin, and the top still needs body to cover the shaved section.
- UpkeepThe undercut needs a clipper run every two or three weeks while the top can go eight, and the top needs texture product to look deliberate.
- Ask forAsk for a disconnected undercut at a number two guard from the temple back to the occipital bone, with the top left long enough to cover it when worn down.
