Layers begin high at the crown and step downward to a perimeter landing near the collarbone, dipping longer at the back. There is enough length hanging to show that dip clearly, so the mullet line reads more obviously than it does in the short version. Weight is taken out of the interior while the outline stays long. Waves suit it because the steps catch the bend; straight hair needs mousse to stop the layers looking flat.

  • Suitsoval, square, round face shapes. The front layers fall in a curtain from the cheekbone down, narrowing the sides of the face while the crown height adds the vertical line a wide face lacks.
  • Hair typemedium density, thick, wavy, straight. There has to be enough hair for the layers to remove without gapping, so mid to thick density suits it, while fine hair loses its perimeter once the interior is cut out.
  • UpkeepTen to twelve weeks between cuts, since grown-out layers still read as part of the shape, and daily routine is mousse plus air drying.
  • Ask forAsk for layers starting at the cheekbone in front and stacked through the crown, with the back perimeter left an inch or two below the front.
