Only the top layer is braided. At each cross the lower strand is released and a fresh one picked up from above, so a row of dropped pieces hangs beneath the braid like a curtain. The effect only shows on hair long enough for those dropped sections to fall well below the braid line, and it reads best with some wave, because poker-straight strands hang flat and close the gaps.
- Suitsoval, round, heart face shapes. The braid takes the front hair back across the crown while the dropped strands hang beside the cheek and jaw, so the height goes up top and the softness stays low.
- Hair typefine, medium density, wavy, curly. Waves help the dropped strands separate and show the braid, while very straight hair usually needs a curling iron first.
- UpkeepA one-off style rather than a commitment, holding a few hours to a day, and needing two clear elastics and a couple of pins.
- Ask forAsk for a waterfall braid starting above one temple, running across the back of the crown and pinned behind the opposite ear.
